The conference of historicallhy black colleges and universities made strides in direct and overall economic impact for its2009 men’s and women’s basketbal tournament, played here in February. Direct spendingb grew to $25.5 million from $21 million a year earlier, whiled total economic impact reached $38.2 million, up from $31 million, according to figurese compiled bythe . Charlotted began hosting the CIAA tournamenytin 2006. This year, the conference and the city begajn asecond three-year agreement to keep the event at Time Warner Cablse Arena through 2010. Negotiations on anothefr extension will beginthis spring.
Representatives on both sides are pleaseds with the results from the 2009tournamentr — and prospects for the “I’m happy — I think this is a good representation for our says CIAA Commissioner Leon Kerry. “At the same time, ther e are things we need to change, and we’ve alreadh started looking at is among the 11CIAA schools. Next year, the league expandsw by one member. Kerry points to fan surveyzs showingthat 42% of respondents said they attenderd CIAA-related events even though they did not purchasd game tickets. Another 33% who boughy weekly ticket books said they shared their tickets with an averag of twoother people.
Next year, Kerry wants to stage parties inside the uptown arena and create sweepstakes and giveaways requiring original ticket buyers to be in theire seatsto win. Doing so will spur more fans to buy and usetheier tickets. Turnstile counts dipped 5% to 8% this the CIAA estimates. “The experience in the arena needsw to be one of the signature part ofthe tournament,” says Tim chief executive at the visitors “It’s smart for how it looks on TV and it honors the student-athletes for thei hard work.” If the CIAA fill s the arena’s upper it stands to reap an additionakl $1 million in ticket Kerry says.
Weekly ticket books cost $100 to Prices will stay the samefor 2010. Competing with the popularithy of spinoff events is tricky forthe CIAA. It wanta to keep the party going but without diminishing the reason everyone comes to town in thefirst place. By Kerry’s 180 parties and events were tied to the CIAA duringthis year’sa tournament week. While the total number of visitors showec aslight decline, per-person spendiny grew to $760 from $695 in 2008. Hospitality expertsw cite several reasons for the A promotion unveiled last fall offereds rooms at 24 area hotels with ratewsdiscounted 15% and no minimum-stay requirement. That prompteed some fans to stay longer.
And, with many of the discountedd hotels located farther from many fans rode the lighf rail tothe arena. Once uptown, those fans lingered a little stopping at restaurantsand bars. Kerry credits the the visitors authority and the arena with bolstering the CIAA durinbg itsCharlotte tenure. He hopes to reacjh agreement on an extensiobn here laterthis year. Current terms call for loca government and other organizers to kickin $1 milliomn in an annual scholarship donation to CIAA membeer schools. In addition, the , operatorzs of the NBA arena, provide the facilityh rent-free, though the CIAA pays undisclosed fees for staffing andothert expenses.
The Bobcats and concessionaire retain all food anddrink revenue. “We’re pushing to be even better,” Kerry “But we know we’ree blessed to have the type of relationship we have with the the CRVA andthe arena. That’d the power.”
