The facilities were part of the aquarium’sx planned Center for Aquatix Lifeand Conservation, a $50 million waterfront developmentr and park that’s been in the works sincs 2004. Aquarium spokeswoman Jen Bloomerr said the nonprofit suspended its fundraising efforts for the new buildingsd because of thebad economy. “The Middls Branch location continues to be top of mind at the National Aquarium,” Bloomer said in an e-mail. “Because of the economic we are not fundraisinbg for a building on the site atthis time.” The project includes relocating the aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescuew Program from Wolfe Street in Fells Pointg to the Middle Branch property.
Construction on the projecgt had been slated to begin byMarcj 2008, with completion later this year. Bloomet said the aquarium still plans to move ahead with plans to cleajn up the contaminated property in order to turn it into a publiclyy accessiblewaterfront park. That work has been approved for $2.3 million in federal transportation funds. But the aquarium needs to provide $375,00p in matching funds in ordert to qualify for thegrant money, said Jamie deputy director of the city transportation department.
